Why Silat training?

In short, because the value of Silat is worth it!

In "Pencak Silat in the Indonesian Archipelago," the value of Silat is highlighted in four areas:

  1. Sport and Self-Defense

  2. Art

  3. Spirituality

  4. Social Role

In regards to sport or olahraga and self-defense or bela diri, Silat training can equip students with the skills to compete in formal competition or to defend themselves from attackers.

When the aesthetic side is explored, it becomes evident that the ability to create something beautiful exists within the realm of Silat.

In terms of spirituality, the author states, "instruction in this philosophy of nobleness of mind and character or budi pekerti luhur is necessary to ensure that pencak silat as an art of combat is not misused to endanger others and disturb public order."  

With respect to its social role, it is a multifaceted wonder. Individually, Silat nurtures humans to become model citizens who conform to societal norms. Collectively, it is proficient at uniting different groups within society. Silat fosters the harmony and integrity of society by creating a feeling of fraternity and equality among its members and followers. 

While I do not disagree with any of these things, I want to focus here on how Silat training helps me accomplish my "WHY," which is to liven and lengthen the lifespans and "healthspans" of my community members.

How’s traveling to Indonesia or Malaysia for adventure?

I have done this numerous times and have known students that have done just that, as well.

What prompted their spirit of adventure?

Silat.

BROTHERHOOD

I have met brothers-from-other-mothers thanks to Silat.

Students of mine have met brothers thanks to Silat.

Training in Silat is a surefire way to become part of a family.

PURPOSE

Silat training can provide a sense of meaning. It can also provide an aim or a goal.

Whether your purpose is self-development, progression in the art, or becoming a torch-bearer, Silat can answer the call.

As a discipline of study that can inspire adventure, foster brotherhood, and create purpose, Silat can certainly liven your life.

Lengthen Your Life

Why Silat training?

It has the capacity to lengthen your life through physical activity, purpose, and stress management.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

As a form of movement and methodical physical exercise, Silat can positively contribute to your health, which can, in turn, contribute to longevity.

PURPOSE

Purpose may be created by training.

This purpose may provide a reason to continue living, as the mission is not yet complete.

STRESS MANAGEMENT

Stress produces a chemical response in the body. This response is designed to prepare the body for fight or flight. If no fight or flight occurs, the chemical products of the stress response linger in the body. These lingering by-products can produce negative consequences.

Like fight or flight, Silat training is movement and, as such, will use up the by-products of the stress response.

Movement is a terrific stress management tool.

Phase Curriculum

This curriculum track blends multiple disciplines into one cohesive whole spread across ten levels of training. Jeet Kune Do is the core of the Phase Curriculum.

Cultural Curriculum

This curriculum track focuses on the individual arts of Kali, Muay Thai, Silat, and Wing Chun.
